Who We Are
OWOC is a Civil Society “Oil Renegotiation and Prosperity for All” Movement and is a “Big Tent of All Guyanese” committed to these goals. This is not a PNC or PPP affair. It’s not about Black and Indian. It is non-partisan and open to all Guyanese who care about Guyanese getting a fair share of our wealth.
OWOC is for all right-thinking Guyanese who feel that the contract signed by former PNC leaders was treasonous and that the PPP Government choosing not to do anything about it, is equally treasonous. Calling for renegotiation does not mean you hate the PPP Government or PNC. We just want our Government and Opposition to be unified in their call for renegotiation of this one-sided contract.
The richest country in CARICOM should not have the lowest standard of living and lowest currency. President Ali said we have been the “second poorest nation in the Americas” for decades, and that we are a “rich country of poor people.” That must change now!
Our Team
The OWOC leadership team is made up of Guyanese from all walks of life who are committed to fighting for the change every Guyanese wants to see. We are based in Guyana and in communities all over the world.
We are highly experienced professionals and our team boasts a number of prominent Guyanese business people, doctors, lawyers, educators, engineers, economists, advocates, and ordinary Guyanese who are united in our call for renegotiation and a better deal for Guyanese from our oil wealth.
What We Do
OWOC is a vibrant and active civil society organization committed to educating and empowering Guyanese to fight for a better oil deal.
We actively advocate for:
- Renegotiation of all one-sided resource contracts where Guyana gets a bad deal
- Better governance, transparency, and accountability related to the management of our natural resource wealth by the Government of Guyana
- Increased environmental protection against environmental degradation brought on by the extractive sector
In The Community
OWOC is actively working within communities throughout Guyana and in this diaspora. Currently, our priorities within the communities that we are in are the following:
- OWOC holds and/or supports ongoing protests against the bad oil contracts and is actively recruiting Guyanese to this cause
- OWOC is involved in grassroots campaigns to meet with community people to find out their needs, concerns, grievances, and issues affecting them, their families, and communities
- OWOC provides financial and other forms of assistance to communities facing tremendous hardship
- OWOC is promoting and education and outreach programme to root out and find solutions to common problems facing our communities
- OWOC is actively engaged with communities throughout Guyana in order to advocate for improved living conditions, better local governance and increased access to oil revenues for all Guyanese
OWOC is willing to work with other civil society groups that support our cause. We want to empower and support them to urgently push for a renegotiation of the oil contract to secure a better deal for Guyana.
Our Mission
Our Mission Is Simple
OWOC is working to educate, empower and mobilize all Guyanese to fight for renegotiation of Guyana’s natural resource contracts so that Guyana may obtain more income to alleviate poverty and usher in the good life for all.
